About    the    Society

The Thamil Cultural Society of British Columbia was formed in 1994, by the Thamils of BC to address multicultural concerns and settlement needs. It aims to bring together all Thamils living in BC by their common cultural heritage and the concerns and interests they share as Thamils living in Canada, regardless of their different countries of origin - India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Fiji, Mauritius, South Africa, Guyana and the Caribbean. The Society's main objective is to assist the Thamil people of B. C. in fostering their culture while they participate fully and successfully in a rapidly evolving multicultural Canada.

The Society continues to promote activities that would enrich the cultural life of Thamil people and create awareness and understanding of their culture among other cultural groups. It will also assist newcomers of Thamil origin to settle successfully in Canada by working together with the government agencies and community organizations that provide settlement and other social services. Thus the Society will strive to fulfill both the cultural and settlement needs of the new and growing Thamil community in British Columbia.

The Society is non-profit, non-political and self-governing. It is a voluntary, community-based and democratically constituted organization, incorporated under the Society Act of B. C. Membership is open to anyone interested in the objectives of the Society and at least 18 years of age. Current Annual membership fee is $15 for an individual and $30 for a family. In year 2001, the Society took initiative to build a centre of its own. The Society is now encouraging everyone to become Life member in the society. The single life membership fee was fixed at $500, for the family it was $1000 and for seniors family $750.
At the AGM 2013, the members approved that the family life membership fee be brought down to $750 and the single life member fee to remain at $500.
The life membership fees will be used only for the development of the building.

In year 2003, the Society bought a building of its own in Surrey to develop that as a THAMIL CULTURAL CENTRE. The address is
THAMIL CULTURAL SOCIETY OF BC
15505-104 Avenue
Surrey, BC.

As per the decision taken at the 2008 AGM, the old building was demolished to build the Thamil Cultural Centre at an estimated cost of $350 000 that will include amenities for conducting Thamil School, Library, Cultural Hall and seniors centre. The Society welcomes donation from everyone to pay back the mortgage and develop the Thamil Cultural Centre. The Society also encourages everyone to become a Life Member of the Society.
